Doodie Herman
My artwork is a response to landscape in all its beautiful forms across the country, from green forests to red desert and the bush in between. Nature has been a place of solace and connection since I was a child and I paint what I feel in its presence, using memory and my own photo references.
When I listened to the album, I thought of undefined spaces and abstraction, and remembered how country unfolded from the perspective of a plane between Mpartnwe (Alice Springs) and Sydney.
I had brought back jars of soil gathered from roadside earthworks over several visits, ground it down and put it through a sieve. I decided to use the fine sand to create the basic composition of these two artworks. There's a little bit of the Red Centre on each canvas.
